When the Future Stops Surprising Us

Estimated read time 4 min read

The MWC (Mobile World Congress Barcelona 2026) is representative of a profound shift in the global digital economy. Far from being a problem, that is probably its greatest achievement. What started as a mobile phone trade show has evolved into the true epicenter of the global digital economy.

This year, even with a slight dip in attendance due to geopolitical tensions, the consensus was clear. This isn’t about phones anymore. It is about everything. Over half of the attendees now come from sectors like automotive, healthcare, or finance. Connectivity is the foundation upon which everything else is built.

Walking through the endless halls, my reaction was consistently the same: “Oh, okay… we can do this now”. I suppose it is the side effect of growing up reading Isaac Asimov. When you spend your life imagining hyper-connected futures, seeing glasses that translate in real time or invisible digital ecosystems no longer blows your mind. They simply fit. We have moved past the “wow” phase. We have entered a phase of pure execution.

Author’s Insight:

“In 2026, the real shift is no longer about imagining what technology can do, but finally deciding what we do with the tools we have.”

The Pragmatism of Agentic AI

Artificial Intelligence is the prime example. We have moved into the era of Agentic AI. These systems transform devices into autonomous assistants. Instead of just answering questions, they execute complex, multi-step tasks without supervision.

This signals a massive shift in the software business. We are moving away from subscription models. Instead, the industry is shifting toward pay per performance. This means paying for the successful execution of tasks.

The Infrastructure Dilemma

While everything moves at breakneck speed, uncomfortable questions are surfacing. Traditional operators face a critical structural issue. They invest heavily in infrastructure but capture only a fraction of the digital ecosystem’s profits.

The AI boom is also driving a “memory winter” due to semiconductor shortages. Simultaneously, computing demands are growing at a rate that threatens global power generation capacity.

Geopolitics now defines the technological front. European consortiums are proposing sovereign cloud and AI ecosystems to guarantee data privacy and security. While the sector remains cautious about 6G investments, the real revolution is coming from space. Direct to Cell satellite connectivity is advancing rapidly. It promises an end to global dead zones.

Beyond the Screen and Ethical Responsibility

The classic rectangular screen is losing ground. We are seeing “invisible” or integrated ecosystems. These include smart glasses, humanoid robots, and hyper-connected vehicles acting as servers on wheels.

But as we admire this technology, a contradiction remains. Millions still lack access to the basics. There was a strong ethical push this year from international organizations. They are calling on the industry to stop designing algorithms aimed at hijacking user attention. We need digital architectures that prioritize mental health and cognitive development by design, especially for minors.

I believe deeply in technology. It is not a spectacle. It is a tool. When properly focused, it has massive potential to transform lives and reduce inequality. The future no longer needs to impress us. It needs us to build it better. There is no point in creating the most advanced technology in the world if we forget about the people.
